In our post today, we will know about the five most beautiful tourist places in Sonmarg. So let’s know one by one about the 5 best places to visit in Sonamarg.

Sonmarg Tourist Places:

Amarnath Cave Temple

It is around 22 km from Sonamarg and is located at 3888 meters above sea level. Amarnath cave temple is nearly 5000 years old. The lingam here is called Swayambhu lingam as it appears on its own. Apart from the Shivling of snow, the cave of Amarnath has two other ice cubes representing Mata Parvati and Lord Ganesha.

The cave of Amarnath was discovered by a Muslim shepherd named Buta Malik. Buta had met a saint, who gave him a bag of complete coal. When he got home, his bag was full of gold coins. So Buta went back to thank the saint, and he found the shrine of Amarnath there. It is believed that in Amarnath Cave, Lord Shiva narrated the secret of immortality to Goddess Parvati.

Gangabal lake & Nund Kol Lake

The Gangabal lake is situated at the foothills of Harmukh mountain in the Ganderbal district. This lake is spread over 167 hectares. Apart from being a trendy trekking spot, it’s a famous pilgrim site as well. The track to Gangabal Lake starts from Naranag. Here is a temple which is dedicated to Lord Buteshwara.

Gangabal is a vital stop station on the Seven Lakes Trek, also known as the “Great Lakes Trek.” The seven lakes trek involves crossing three passes, each more than 4000 meters high. Adjacent to Gangabal is another famous lake, the Nund Kol Lake. Both lakes derive their source from the Harmukh glacier. Harmukh glacier is the second highest peak of Kashmir valley, which is easily visible from almost all the valley. The height of the mountain is about 5150 meters.

Thajiwas Glacier

The Thajiwas glacier is the biggest attraction of Sonmarg. It is located at an altitude of about 9000 feet from sea level. It would be best to combine a Jeep ride and a Ponies horse ride to reach the glacier. The pony ride is quite beautiful as you have the mighty Himalayan ranges for the company throughout. The month of March to September is considered the best time to visit Thajiwas Glacier when the weather is charming, and one can enjoy a wide variety of activities. Here you can enjoy the activities such as ice skiing, hiking, photography, and sledding. A lot of Hindi movies have been shot in Thajiwas Glacier.

Zoji La Pass

The distance from Sonmarg to ZojiLa Pass is about 24 kilometres. The roads here are very short, and because of being built between the hills, landslides and traffic jams often occur here. The elevation here is about 11500 feet above sea level.

Zero Point of Zojila Pass is a stunning tourist spot. Here you will do a lot of activities. A little ahead of Zero Point is the ZojiLa War Memorial dedicated to the war heroes of 1948 in Ghumari. It is made in a lovely and quiet place. Friends, if you come on this route, you can stop here and pay tribute to war heroes.

Pakistani-backed tribals captured the Zojila Pass in 1948; the Indian Army recaptured it by Operation Bison. This was a complicated operation, and for the first time in the world, any army brought its battle tanks at such a height, and that too when there was no way to come here.

It is around 16kms from Sonamarg. Naranag is a beautiful place that is relatively unexplored. Tall green mountains and dense forests surround this beautiful place. If you love photography, then this place is going to be an ideal destination for you. The best part about this place is its remarkable history.

So, according to locals, this place was built by Pandavas. And this was the time after they had won the war of Kurukshetra, and they had given it up and then while during their journey sheltered in this area. It is also said that Bheem himself built the Naranag temple. This temple was built during the 8th century.
