EXCLUSIVE: Na het vertrek van Emma Watts bij 20th Century Studios vorige maand, is de 18-jarige veteraan van het label, Steve Asbell, benoemd tot President, Production, van de Disney-owned filmdivisie, zo heeft Deadline vernomen. Hij zal rapporteren aan Walt Disney Studios Co-Chairman en Chief Creative Officer Alan Horn en Co-Chairman Alan Bergman.

Asbell diende eerder als EVP, Production, 20th Century Studios (20th Century Fox), sinds 2012 en is sinds 2002 werkzaam bij de studio. Hij wordt zeer gerespecteerd door filmmakers als James Mangold, met wie hij werkte aan The Wolverine, Logan en het tweevoudig Oscarwinnende en $225M+ bruto producerende Ford v Ferrari, en Ridley Scott, met wie hij werkte aan het zevenvoudig voor een Oscar genomineerde The Martian en het aankomende The Last Duel, dat momenteel voor een kerstrelease staat gepland.

Asbell houdt momenteel toezicht op de aankomende films Death on the Nile, gepland voor 9 oktober, en The Last Duel. Voorafgaand aan Fox, bekleedde hij functies in de productie bij Beacon Pictures, Mutual Film Co, en DreamWorks Studios.

Daarnaast is Vanessa Morrison benoemd tot President, Streaming, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, en zal toezicht houden op de ontwikkeling en productie van Disney+ filmcontent van The Walt Disney Studios voor zowel Disney Live Action als 20th Century Studios. Ze zal rapporteren aan Sean Bailey, President, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production.

Morrison diende het meest recent als President, Fox Family, na een decennialange stint als President, Fox Animation.

Naast verschillende van de Ice Age-films en de Rio-films, overzag ze de ontwikkeling en productie van de animatiefilms Ferdinand, The Peanuts Movie, The Book of Life, Epic, en The Fantastic Mr. Fox, en Twentieth Century Fox’s live-action Garfield en Cheaper by the Dozen-films. Onder de projecten die ze momenteel overziet voor Disney+ zijn films gebaseerd op bekende franchises als Cheaper by the Dozen, Night at the Museum, en Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Andere benoemingen vandaag zijn Philip Steuer die fysieke en postproductie en VFX zal leiden als President, Production, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, en Randi Hiller die casting zal leiden als EVP, Casting – toezicht op deze functies voor zowel Disney Live Action als 20th Century Studios.

Beiden zullen tweevoudig rapporteren aan Asbell en Bailey. Dit maakt deel uit van een uitlijning van enkele productiefuncties over de twee studio’s -voor zowel theatrale als streaming content- die een grotere coördinatie van het grootste deel van de live-action producties van The Walt Disney Studios mogelijk zal maken, inclusief ondersteuning voor Searchlight Pictures.

Steuer heeft sinds 2014 de fysieke productie geleid voor Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production. Sinds zijn komst naar Disney heeft hij toezicht gehouden op de productie van films als The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, Jungle Cruise, en Cruella, evenals Disney’s output voor Disney+, waaronder The Lady and the Tramp, Togo, Timmy Failure: Er zijn fouten gemaakt, en Stargirl. Voordat hij bij Disney kwam, produceerde Steuer Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks en de Chronicles of Narnia-films en was hij uitvoerend producent van onder andere Oz The Great and Powerful, The Alamo en The Rookie.

Hiller heeft sinds 2011 de casting geleid voor Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production-films, waaronder veel van Disney’s live-action sprookjesverfilmingen van Maleficent, Assepoester en The Jungle Book tot Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King en Mulan. Ze hield ook toezicht op de casting voor Saving Mr. Banks, Into the Woods, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, de aankomende films Jungle Cruise en Cruella, en de Disney+ films The Lady and the Tramp, Togo, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, en Stargirl. Voordat ze bij Disney kwam, was ze een Emmy-genomineerde onafhankelijke casting director die tal van films castte, waaronder enkele van de eerste films in het Marvel Cinematic Universe (Iron Man, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, en “The Avengers), evenals de Oscar-winnende Crash.
